The Creative Power of Limiting Your Tools

Aug 29, 2025

It might sound strange, but here’s something I’ve learned again and again — too much freedom can actually block creativity.

Ever stood in front of your art supplies, totally overwhelmed? Rows of paints. A basket full of brushes. Dozens of surfaces to choose from. And somehow… it feels harder to start?

You’re not alone.
When there are too many options, our brain goes into overthinking mode.
What if I choose the wrong brush?
Should I go bold or soft?
Acrylic or mixed media?
And just like that… the joy slips away.

Here’s the secret: Less can be more.

Some of my most freeing and fun painting sessions have come from using just a few tools.

Limiting your materials doesn’t limit your creativity — it unlocks it.
When your choices are fewer, your focus sharpens. Your playfulness returns. You start making instead of deciding.

Want to try it?

Here’s a simple challenge:

  • Set a timer for 10 minutes.
  • Pick 2 colors (any two — don’t overthink it).
  • Grab 1 brush (or your fingers, if you feel brave).
  • Then… paint anything.

No expectations. No rules. Just movement, color, and curiosity.

You’ll be surprised how much freedom lives inside a few good limits.

My own 10-minute trick

One day, I was totally stuck. I’d been scrolling online, comparing my work (never a good idea), and feeling like nothing I did was original anymore. So I grabbed just a big brush, turquoise and white paint, and set the timer.

The first strokes felt stiff. But then… something loosened. The pressure was gone.
And what came out?
A soft, abstract piece that ended up being the base for one of my favorite paintings.

All because I simplified.

So next time you feel overwhelmed, don’t add more.

Take something away.

Let your limits guide you — they might just lead you somewhere magical.

Until next Thursday,

🎨 Hege
